The Subiaco Roots Festival, an event that unveils the deep cultural and culinary connections of the Aniene Valley, unfolds every year on the last weekend of August. This extraordinary event takes visitors on a journey through time, exploring the cultural roots of the area through a food and wine walk in the charming historic center of Subiaco.

Rocca Abbaziale – Location of excellence for the Festival of Roots

Under the imposing shadow of the Rocca Abbaziale, which was once home to illustrious personalities such as the Barberini, the Colonna and even Lucrezia Borgia, the alleys and squares of the town in the province of Rome come alive with a lively celebration. The event offers the opportunity to rediscover and spread cultural roots through authentic flavors, traditional crafts, musical performances, dances and poems of past times.

The old cellars of the village open their doors, allowing participants to breathe the unique atmosphere of the festivals of the past. Equipped with a bag and glass, people embark on a fascinating food and wine tour that presents 26 courses of typical local cuisine, pairing them with renowned local wines. At the same time, folk music and songs add a cheerful and engaging note to the festive atmosphere.

The program of the Festival delle Radici also includes an exhibition-market dedicated to popular music and traditional violin making. Expert craftsmen and makers of instruments such as bagpipes, accordions, guitars and drums proudly display their work, inviting visitors to experience its enveloping sounds. In the afternoon, the music of the instruments of the agro-pastoral tradition serves as the perfect background for poems and stornelli performed strictly in dialect, creating an authentic and engaging experience.

At the end of this unforgettable event, the charming square of Santa Maria della Valle hosts the traditional “panarda”, an outdoor dinner that recalls the atmosphere of the meals eaten by the ancestors. The menu, consisting of simple but delicious dishes, is a tribute to the local culinary tradition, completing the Subiaco Roots Festival with a taste and cultural experience of great impact.
