Trekking Vallepietra: Discovering Nature and Springs

Vallepietra, a charming village in the Simbrivio Valley, stands in the heart of the Simbruini Mountains Regional Natural Park, just 100 km from Rome. This area, characterized by unspoiled nature and an extraordinary hydrogeological heritage, offers an exciting trekking experience.

A Living Landscape: Springs and Rivers of Vallepietra

Vallepietra’s roots lie in the five rivers that originate from the valley’s springs, creating a vibrant landscape of freshness and vitality. The source of “Le Vaglie” and the river “Muralli” at Monte Autore are just some of the natural wonders that enrich this land.

Crossing the picturesque town of “San Angelo”, the river of the same name channels the beauty of these lands, offering enchanting views along the way.

Monumental Treasures: De Santis Aqueduct (Simbrivio) and Sanctuary of the Holy Trinity

The trek continues towards the magical “Goldfinch” and the imposing De Santis aqueduct (Simbrivio). This monument from 1918, with eight springs gushing from tunnels about 300 meters deep, represents one of the most grandiose works in Italy and feeds a large part of the Lazio Region.

The Sanctuary of the Holy Trinity, enriched in 1955 with a second water system, amplifies the flow of the majestic structure of De Santis (Simbrivio). The return through the locality “Belvedere” reveals further springs that contribute to the vast water system of the Simbrivio region.

History and Water: Power Plant, Fountains and Natural Springs

The history of Vallepietra is traced by the presence of the first water-powered power plant, operational since 1903 in “Carpinetto”, which supplied energy to Rome’s trams and illuminated illustrious fountains such as Piazza della Repubblica.

The SS. Trinità provincial road, crossed by numerous small springs called “Acqua dei Piccioni”, offers fresh and purifying water. The “Queen’s Spring” in the children’s park near the village, with its low-mineral water, is an oasis of freshness.

The Seven Fountains and Beyond: Connection with Nature and History

Along the provincial road to Vallepietra, at “Casa Reale”, there are “Le Sette Fontane”, a place of supply for pilgrims and tourists, creating a direct link with the nature and history of this fascinating region.

In the Simbrivio Valley, more than a thousand springs and rivulets of water intertwine, forming a vital and evocative network. Through the constant flow of the waters of the Simbrivio, the thousand-year history of this valley is revealed, testifying to the richness of the water that has shaped the identity of this extraordinary region.
