The experience

Exploring the Museum of the 900

The Museum of the 900 and the Shoah stands as a living monument, a bridge to the past that allows us to immerse ourselves in the dramatic events of the Second World War and the Shoah, with a particular focus on the battle of Cassino.

A journey into the past and memory

Through an engaging and interactive itinerary, visitors are taken on a journey through time, reliving the crucial moments of the early twentieth century, from fascism to emigration, from the internment of foreign Jews to the terrible stages on the way to Auschwitz, up to the relief efforts for former Allied prisoners and the reconstruction of the Abbey of Montecassino.

The Museum’s eight themed rooms offer a complete overview of these events, enriched by illustrative panels, touch screens, virtual reality devices, projections, showcases and display cases containing period objects. Each room is a chapter in history, a window into human suffering and resilience in the face of the horror of war and the Holocaust.

In collaboration with the Holocaust Museum in Washington, the Museum of the Twentieth Century and the Shoah aims to preserve historical memory and educate future generations about the tragedy and the importance of tolerance and mutual understanding. The rooms dedicated to emigration offer a vivid portrait of the life paths of those who left their homeland in search of a better future, facing challenges and sacrifices along the way.

Among these emigrants were stonemasons and young workers who contributed to the construction of monumental works such as the New York-Boston Railway Line, testifying with their work to the strength and determination of the Italian community in the new world. Others have found fortune as successful entrepreneurs, thanks to their skill and perseverance.

But the bond with the homeland has remained strong even for those who have crossed the ocean in search of new opportunities. The communities of Sandonato and other Italian emigrants have continued to keep the link with their roots alive, sending aid back home in the form of clothes, shoes, medicine and money, thus demonstrating a deep attachment to their homeland.

Through the personal stories of those who lived through these experiences, the Museum of the Twentieth Century and the Shoah aims to convey a message of hope and resilience, inviting visitors to reflect on the tragedies of the past and to commit themselves to a future of peace and understanding among peoples. Every object on display, every testimony collected is a warning against oblivion and an invitation to memory, so that the atrocities of the past can never be repeated.
