Back to the Roots: Living the Past in the Village of Your Ancestors
Castel di Tora - Colle di Tora - Rocca Sinibalda: patrons, nature and traditions
You can visit the village with the remains of the city walls, the two watchtowers and the pentagonal tower of the fortress built on a sheer cliff. You will visit the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista, guardian of frescoes from the sixteenth century and a bell tower where violet and mint grow; the Sanctuary of Santa Anatolia, martyr, whose effigy was made by the emigrants of the town in the early 900s. To this day, the feast of St. Anatolia attracts those who are originally from the village and many faithful from the surrounding villages and Sabina who see s. Anatolia as their particular protector. From the main square of the village with the Triton Fountain, the narrow streets start, ancient caves and cellars carved into the rock
You can have breakfast at the historic bakery founded by emigrants in Switzerland and still today guardian of the ancient recipes recovered by the “old bakers and old women of the village”: traditional sweets, yellow bread and Easter pizza, nociata, biscuits with hazelnuts, amaretti biscuits. You will participate in the experience of making bread and traditional pastries. Afterwards you will visit Lake Turano, and you can sunbathe in the bathhouse on the shores of the basin. Tradition has it that you will have your packed lunch with the products prepared from the oven.
Colle di Tora:in the small village with white houses that is reflected in the crystal clear waters of the lake, you can admire the naturalistic panorama of great beauty. You can taste the full-bodied dishes of land and zero-kilometer products including the famous “pea bean”. Among the elderly farmers it is said that the seed was introduced to Colle di Tora by a lady who emigrated to South America during the early twentieth century and who returned from the Andes with a bag of white beans. The pea bean is sold almost exclusively in local markets in the Lake Turano area. This rounded legume with a delicate taste and pasty texture has the characteristic of not separating from the skin even after cooking. The production, entirely manual, is located around 900 m above sea level and begins with sowing at the end of May and harvesting at the end of September. Only in this place is the legume able to take on the organoleptic and productive characteristics for which it is known. To celebrate this particular legume, every year in October in Colle di Tora there is the traditional festival of the “Pea bean”.
Rocca Sinibalda:The Castle of Rocca Sinibalda is worth a visit, the “Castle of the Metamorphoses” for the frescoes inside which Ovid’s Metamorphoses are represented. Around 1950 it was bought by an American noblewoman: Caresse Crosby , an American publisher, activist and writer. She is also remembered as the inventor of the modern bra (having received the first specific patent), the American protector of the arts and “godmother of the lost generation of writers who emigrated to Paris“. The poets of the Beat Generation and great artists including Ezra Pound and Peggy Guggenheim lived in the Castle. You can stay in the castle’s suites and taste dishes made with local products made by the women of the village.
Labro-Greccio-Rieti-Casperia: art and faith
Lip: One of the most beautiful villages in Italy that is worth a visit for the Nobili Vitelleschi Castle. In the sixties, after a long period of neglect, the work of recovery of the town began by the Belgian architect Van Mossevelde through a careful restoration and conservation of the stylistic characteristics of the buildings, followed by numerous works to recover stairways, aedicules, portals, arches and windows. Numerous Belgian and Flemish families have decided to establish their summer residences in the village of Labro, contributing to the recovery of the historic settlement. If the external appearance of the village has remained what it was, the restored houses, inside, are beautifully finished and organized, respecting the ancient environments but with the flavor of simplicity combined with practicality. The guided tour inside the castle allows you to relive the atmosphere of distant times.
Greccio: you can visit the sanctuary of Greccio, whose worldwide fame is linked to St. Francis of Assisi who gave life to the representation of the first living Nativity scene here in the year 1223. During the Christmas season you can admire the spectacular nativity scenes on display throughout the country, from miniature works set in the walls to the largest displays that can be found in front of hotels and guesthouses. You can also follow in the footsteps of the Saint by walking along one of the stretches of the “Way of Francis”, a trekking route to visit the most significant places associated with his life and his spiritual message. The route crosses central Italy and is usually covered on foot, but can also be tackled by bicycle or other means of transport. Whether you want to take a leisurely walk on easy trails or a more challenging hike, whether you are a beginner or an expert, you will always find something suitable for you in Greccio.
Rieti:an ancient tradition has it that Rieti is the geographical center of Italy, the so-called Umbilicus Italiae. Here you will find a plaque in which it is written in 20 languages “Centro d’Italia” and a travertine monument depicting the base of a column celebrating the navel of Italy. You will visit the archaeological complex of Rieti Sotterranea to discover a mighty viaduct built by the Romans to avoid the swamping of the Via Salaria, the ancient Salt Road.
Casperia: just 50 km from Rome, you will visit the village of medieval charm mentioned by Virgil in the Aeneid, praised by the London newspaper Times as a model of migration in reverse. Casperia’s bond with the Anglo-Saxon world was born after a quidditch competition: the sport practiced by Harry Potter, organized thanks to the large colony of English who live here regularly and have bought houses.
