The Festival of Roots is a journey, a vision, a path guided by a method. The Festival of Roots is a widespread, itinerant Festival. It is a project of the Glocal Think Association whose vision is linked to the well-being and quality of life of small municipalities and their communities. Well-being that passes through sustainable economic and social development. In the year of Italian roots in the world, the Festival celebrates the Italian communities abroad but without forgetting the future of small municipalities that struggle against depopulation and lack of services. “If you’re not at home, feel at home” is the 2024 claim of the Festival that will touch more than thirty municipalities in two regions, Lazio and Campania. Roots are living memories and taking care of them means making sure that the tree of life can thrive, they are invisible threads that intertwine the stories, traditions and experiences handed down from generation to generation. With the Festival we immerse ourselves in the essence of these connections by celebrating the cultural heritage that binds us to the past, while shaping our present and building the future. This year, the Festival of roots is contaminated with the Festival of Stories to share experiences, preserve oral traditions, create a network that unites Italy and abroad, that heals wounds and rebuilds the collective memory, the history of those who left and those who stayed and those who arrive, a common history that is the history of Italy. The workshops are organized in collaboration with the Comprehensive Institute of Alvito – Agricultural Technical Institute.

PROGRAM OF MEETINGS
11.30 a.m. Vittorio Macioce and Luigi Viglietta – Stories and faces of our home A village also belongs to those who no longer exist. It is regrets and promises, missed opportunities or taken on the fly, for a short time. It is this desire that takes you every now and then to talk to the shadows, who have endless stories to tell. This is why on a morning at the end of August we are here, to pull our dead out of the folds, and scars, of space and time. We do it together with you, in an open meeting, to ask you if you remember those who lived in these places. It is a tribute and a way not to forget.
10.00 p.m. Vincenzo Castaldo and Emanuela Sica – The song of the roots Stories serve to plow the land and make it fertile. Stories take root. Stories are a song that reaches far away and calls name by name those who have left. Stories speak for those who are no longer with us and for those who will be there. The “Traveler of the Roots” becomes a citizen of the places he visits, integrating and authentically living the local traditions and customs, avoiding protocols and standard criteria without identity. The “Traveler of the Roots” loves anomalies, dissonances, that something unique that is in each of us. These are not just events but powerful tools to disseminate the values and objectives of Glocal Think, demonstrating how local culture can connect with the world, creating a positive and lasting impact and a development model to counter depopulation by reversing the trend with concrete solutions. 10.30 pm – Giuseppe Marino – The soul of a market
11.00 p.m. Cesidio Iacobone, Vittorio Macioce – The song of immigrants The songs of Italian immigration, in Europe and in the United States: from “Santa Lucia lontana” to “Merica Merica”, from “Amara terra mia” to “Ciao amore ciao”. A journey through the history of Italians who have left and are still proud of their roots. I don’t know if you remember that scene from Good Morning Babylon. It is the film of the Taviani brothers. Hollywood, 1913. It is the time of silent films. Griffith is filming his masterpiece: Intolerance. Two Tuscan artisans work with him, good at building, hands and brains fleeing from an Italy in economic crisis. It’s not easy to stay there. The reputation of Italians in those years was low, very low. They are poor, they are rags, they are far away. The chief production designer is an American, annoyed by these two beggars that the director wanted in the film, with the result of stealing work from the Californian workers. It doesn’t matter that the two are true masters in dealing with stone. The insult is daily. The Italians there overseas are all Dago, Guinea, Guido, Mario, Gino, they are smelly and subversive, lazy and black. “Italians belly in the sun, and hands on belly”.
